Long before Seattle became ground zero for the 90s grunge explosion, the Pacific Northwest was breeding a fierce, highly technical strain of American power metal and thrash. At the forefront of this movement stood Sanctuary. Formed in 1985 by guitarist Lenny Rutledge and the legendary late vocalist Warrel Dane, the band caught the ear of Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, who took them under his wing, landed them a record deal, and produced their explosive 1987 debut album, Refuge Denied.

Refuge Denied delivered a lethal combination of razor-sharp riffing, twin-guitar harmonies, and Warrel Dane’s astonishing, sky-scraping vocal range. Anchored by heavy metal anthems like Battle Angels and a venomous cover of Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit, Sanctuary instantly made their mark. Their 1990 follow-up masterpiece, Into the Mirror Black, refined their sound into something darker, more atmospheric, and deeply complex. Tracks such as Future Tense and Seasons of Destruction laid down the musical blueprint that would eventually evolve into progressive metal titans Nevermore.

Following the tragic passing of Warrel Dane in 2017, the original members led by Lenny Rutledge chose to honor his legacy by keeping these timeless tracks alive where they belong—on stage. Now fronted by the incredible Joseph Michael (Witherfall), Sanctuary delivers those challenging vocal lines with sheer power and utmost precision.
