The history of this Czech outfit is far from a straightforward rock story, which is precisely why Pražský Výběr remains such an exceptional phenomenon. The band’s journey evolved from the complex jazz-rock found on their debut LP Žízeň (1978) into a wild fusion of new wave, art-rock, and heavy guitar riffs. Once core duo Michael Kocáb and guitar wizard Michal Pavlíček joined forces with bassist Vilém Čok, they birthed an explosive act unlike anything else in Central Europe at the time. In 1982, they recorded a game-changing self-titled album, but the communist regime immediately banned the band and shelved the master tapes. Consequently, their second record Výběr (1987)—featuring the massive hit "Snaživec"—hit the shelves first, while the shelved debut was delayed until 1988 under the title Straka v hrsti. Long before its official release, bootleg cassette tapes turned anthems like "Pražákům, těm je hej," "Zubatá," and "Hrabě X" into widespread underground classics.
Instrumentally, the band operates at the very top of their game. Pavlíček’s guitar work cuts through the mix with surgical precision and raw hard rock grit, Čok’s aggressive basslines drive the low end, and Kocáb’s keyboard arrangements add a distinct layer of eccentric theatricality. Pražský Výběr has never been just about traditional songwriting; their performance is a stage spectacle powered by grotesque humor, theatrical masks, and top-tier musicianship. With a heavy focus on complex rhythms and driving guitar hooks, their sound easily appeals to fans of progressive rock and classic heavy metal alike. Bringing a masterclass in musicianship and rock history to Basinfirefest, Pražský Výběr delivers an unmissable festival set.
