Hulder is an American black metal project led by multi-instrumentalist Marliese Beewsaert, originally from Belgium. Since its inception, Hulder has drawn attention thanks to a blend of raw, traditional black metal and dark, atmospheric melodicism that evokes medieval mysticism and forest magic. While inspired by early Scandinavian bands, Hulder’s music still feels distinctive and contemporary.
A major breakthrough came with the EP Embraced by Darkness Mysts and later with the debut album Godslastering: Hymns of a Forlorn Peasantry, which demonstrated how powerfully Hulder can merge primitive aggression with majestic atmosphere. Her work features ferocious tremolo riffs and thunderous blast beats alongside melodic keyboard layers and acoustic interludes that recall old European legends. It is precisely this combination of dark harshness and pagan-tinged poetry that makes Hulder’s music uniquely evocative and recognizable.
In recent years, the project has continued to grow, including on the live front — Hulder now performs with a lineup of supporting musicians, appearing in clubs as well as at major metal festivals. Her newer material shows a shift toward even broader atmospheric and compositional depth without losing the ferocity at the heart of her black metal sound. Hulder has thus firmly established herself as one of the most compelling contemporary projects, bridging the spirit of old-school black metal with her own dark, occult signature.
